Rushbrook Primary Academy Music Curriculum Statement

At Rushbrook, music is taught using the Charanga musical school scheme, which provides a vast library of songs supporting all the requirements of the National Curriculum.

We follow the National Curriculum guidance in Key Stages 1 and 2, and Expressive Art and Design in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The interrelated dimensions of music (listening and appraising, differing musical activities and performing) are taught alongside each other through each unit to encourage the development of musical skills.

As well as teaching music through this scheme, children in KS2 are invited to join the school choir, which meets weekly. The children take part in musical concerts with other school choirs each year (Young Voices, Children of Bury Sing) and perform regularly at Rushbrook (e.g. Harvest, Christmas, Mothers’ Day). The choir have also visited a local care home at Christmas to sing carols for the residents. A musician from the Halle Orchestra worked with the children in school as part the Halle’s ‘Adopt a Player’ programme’. A summer musical concert is held for parents each year when again the children are encouraged to show case their musical talents.

Throughout the year, children are encouraged to familiarise themselves with musical terminology which is age-appropriate and relevant to the learning they are experiencing
