Rushbrook Primary Academy Science Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Rushbrook, we aim to encourage a sense of curiosity, interest and excitement about science and the natural world. We follow the National Curriculum guidance in Key Stages 1 and 2, and Understanding the World in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Where possible our science topics link in with our History and Geography topics ensuring a balanced programme of study.

We aim to provide all our children with a broad and balanced science curriculum, which will prepare them for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Medium Term Plans and Schemes of Work are planned to ensure full NC coverage and progression. Our planning is based on ‘Inspiring Science’ a planning support tool from Lancashire County Council. At Rushbrook, children are encouraged to ask their own questions and are given opportunities to use their scientific skills to carry out research, to problem solve and discover the answers for themselves. Working Scientifically skills are embedded into lessons to ensure these skills are consistently being developed. New vocabulary and challenging concepts are introduced through direct teaching and reinforced regularly through working walls and topic-based quizzes. To complement and broaden the curriculum, a wide range of extra-curricular activities, visits and trips are planned, these are purposeful and link with the knowledge being taught in class. We create curiosity, enthusiasm and aspirations by holding science days, inviting visits from various people such as the Bug Man, the Spaceman, STEM Ambassadors, and the team from Wonder Dome. We are committed to providing rich and exciting science experiences through workshops with experts, collaborative work with our local high school, using the outdoor environment and the local parks. Visits to museums, the farm, Delamere Forest, the zoo and the garden centre, provide further first-hand, enrichment experiences to build science capital.

Impact

The impact of the science curriculum is to ensure children have the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. They acquire age related skills and conceptual knowledge linked to the curriculum. They develop a richer vocabulary which will enable them to articulate their understanding of taught concepts. They will have high aspirations, which will see them through to further study, work and a successful adult life.

Impact is measured in the following ways:

· Pre and post learning assessments and quizzes

· Tracking attainment using Primary Assessment for Science against National Curriculum expectations and Working Scientifically skills.

· Impact is monitored through learning walks, pupil voice, book scrutinies and displays.
